The Government of Ghana has further disclosed its efforts to combat illegal small-scale mining, or “galamsey,” through an intensified phase of Operation Halt, led by the Ghana Armed Forces.

This operation aims to eliminate illegal mining activities that threaten the country’s river bodies and forest reserves.

In a press release issued on October 9, 2024, the Ministry of Information revealed that the government had finalized plans to further strengthen Operation Halt.

The next phase of the operation will see increased collaboration with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana, reinforcing the government’s commitment to working with industry stakeholders to curb the illegal mining crisis.

The government has reaffirmed that river bodies and forest reserves are designated as “red zones”, strictly off-limits for any form of mining activity. These protected areas will remain under strict surveillance to prevent environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.

Minister of Information Fatimatu Abubakar reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources. She called for a collective effort, urging all stakeholders to unite in the fight against illegal mining. “Government reiterates its commitment to the fight against illegal mining and calls on all stakeholders to join the fight.”
