Former Station Manager of Radio Univers, Dr. Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, popularly known as “Alhaji,” has called on the current management of the station to incorporate modern trends and technology into the training of student-journalists to help them adapt to the ever-changing field of journalism and avoid being left behind.

He made this call while addressing guests at a send-off dinner held in honour of level 400 newsroom volunteers at the Volta Hall Dining Hall on September 15, 2025.

“As we look forward, we must also be innovative. I call on the new management of Univers to introduce modern training methods that equip students with the tools to meet today’s demands — from mastering new technologies to navigating the fast-changing landscape of media. This is key,” he urged.

Dr. Abubakari also tasked continuing volunteers to rise to the occasion and leave a lasting legacy.

“To the next generation of leaders, I challenge you to uphold the highest standards of integrity, honour, and ethics. These are the values that will inspire those who come after you to follow suit,” he added.

He further encouraged the outgoing volunteers to fact-check and critically analyse every piece of information they encounter, stressing the importance of being proactive and diligent as they transition into the professional world.

“The training here at Univers has given you excellence in competition with your formal curriculum — and that comes with a lot of responsibility. Your ability to manage your time and deliver in both spheres will shape who you become. So, I emphasise: do not be a lazy journalist or a ‘wheelchair broadcaster.’ Instead, be a committed one — researching, reading, and listening every day. Be a good critical analyst and base your analysis on the facts available to you,” he noted.

The ceremony was well attended by key members of the university community, including Prof. Abena Animwaa Yeboah-Banin, Chairperson of the University Media Management Committee and Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies; Dr. Kwaku Botwe, General Manager of Radio Univers; and Dr. Austin Luguterah, Director of the Sports and Wellness Directorate. Pamela Korsah of the Public Affairs Directorate was also present.

Other notable guests included Radio Univers alumni such as Giovanni Caleb and Joseph Kofi Frimpong Ackah-Blay of TV3, and Abdul Karim Ibrahim, formerly of Class FM and now Regional Coordinator of the Africa Unite Parliamentary Network for Global Health.
