President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, says football in Ghana has improved significantly and continuous to grow under his watch as FA president.
When asked whether football is stepping up right under his leadership, the GFA boss stressed, “Football is not only stepping up right, is stepping up bright.”
As Ghana football prepares to elect a new president later this year, Various national teams have secured a mixed results during his term.
The black stars have taken the biggest hit by finishing bottom of 2021 AFCON and 2022 world cup group stage but the black satellites lifted the U-17 AFCON in 2019 before failing to qualify to the subsequent editions to defend their title.
The women U-17 national team got banned from taking part in international competitions for two years after it was detected that they fielded an unqualified player in their qualifying match against Algeria.
In an interview with Supersport, the FA president intimated that he has served diligently since 2019 and is confident of being giving the nod to continue as the FA president.
“What I know is that am blessed to be alive, I have the right levels of passion for the sport. What I know is that I appreciate the opportunity that Ghanaians and the football family offered me to serve, this opportunity I will never ever forget and I don’t take this lightly. what I have said here is that football will speak and football will speak just like it spoke in 2019. I know for a fact that we have served football to the best of our ability. we were told when we first went to the classroom that there is 24 hours in a day, but football has taught us that there is more than 24 hours in a day, we have worked more than 24 hours in a day throughout this period from 2019 up till today. our people in the sport do appreciate our hard work and we will continue to work until our time is up,” Kurt Okraku said.
The FA president has come under scrutiny recently following the upcoming elections to elect new set of executives to spearhead the affairs of the Ghana football association for the next for years.
There has been numerous calls for the GFA president to go unopposed but others believe he has not done enough to be given such opportunity.
For democracy and fairness to prevail, some are of the conviction that interested persons should be given the liberty to contest the incumbent GFA president for the presidential portfolio.
The debate rages on as the elections draw closer but it remains to be seen whether Kurt Okraku will go unopposed or not.
