First green film festival in Ghana to be held in Accra to champion environmental awareness

Accra is set to host the first-ever Green Film Festival Accra (GFFA) from October 11th to 12th, 2024. with the aim of bringing to spotlighting environmental conservation and sustainable living through the powerful medium of film. 

The GFFA will feature a diverse lineup of eco-focused films, including documentaries, short films, and feature-length movies that address pressing environmental issues. The festival not only aims to raise awareness but also inspire actionable change among its audience.

The Festival Co-Director, Isaac Aboah explained that through film making, awareness can be created for individuals and organizations to be enncouraged to promote sustainable practices.

“The Green Film Festival is a critical initiative to mobilize our community around the pressing issues of climate change and environmental sustainability. Through the power of film, we can drive awareness and action, encouraging individuals and institutions to adopt sustainable practices. The Festival is a testament to the role of creative media in shaping a more resilient and eco-conscious future.”

Mr. Joshua Amponsah, who is also one of the Festival’s Co-Director, revealed that the sim of the GFFA is to inspire action and challenge organizations to lead by example on environmental sustainability.

“Our world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss. The GFFA serves as a powerful platform to amplify these urgent messages through the art of storytelling. By leveraging the film’s persuasive power, we aim to inspire action and challenge local and international organizations to lead by example and promote environmental stewardship.”

The GFFA is supported by personalities in the media landscape and people who are passionate about climate change, including the Chief Executive Officer of EIB Network, Nathan Kwabena Anokye Addisi, popularly known as Bola Ray, and Prof. Ama Browne Klutse, who is the Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC’s) Working Group.

A significant highlight of the festival is its commitment to empowering local filmmakers. By providing a platform for Ghanaian creatives to share their unique perspectives on environmental issues, the GFFA hopes to amplify their voices on an international stage. This initiative underscores the festival’s dual mission of promoting environmental awareness and supporting the local film industry.

In addition to film screenings, the GFFA will offer a range of activities designed to engage and educate attendees. These include panel discussions, workshops, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers and environmental experts.
