Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that the government is set to reintroduce road tolls in 2025, three years after their abolishment, under a technology-driven collection system.
This announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during his budget presentation, where he underscored the importance of generating revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure development.
According to him, the reintroduction of road tolls is essential and will be collected through a new digital system designed to enhance efficiency and eliminate corruption.
“We cannot continue to allow our roads to deteriorate while revenue sources are left idle. The reintroduction of tolls is necessary, but it will be done efficiently through digital means to eliminate corruption and ensure every pesewa is accounted for. This is not a return to the old ways of doing things. We are introducing a modern system that will ensure convenience and transparency”
He also revealed that the removal of tolls had created a GH¢2 billion shortfall in road maintenance funding, leading to worsening road conditions and stalled projects.
He assured Parliament that, this time, toll revenue would be strictly monitored and allocated exclusively for road infrastructure improvements.
Despite concerns from some transport operators about potential traffic congestion and delays, the government maintains that the new system will be seamless and cashless.
