The Electoral Commission (EC), Jeas annulled the parliamentary election results for Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North due to procedural violations and threats to its staff during the collation process.
At a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, December 19, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa highlighted irregularities that led to the decision. She stated that results in Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North were declared without proper collation, with several polling station results excluded. In Okaikwei Central, results from 31 polling stations were omitted. Similarly, in Ablekuma North, results from 62 polling stations were not included in the collation.
“In Okaikwei Central, the winner was declared without accounting for results from 31 polling stations. Similarly, in Ablekuma North, a winner was announced without collating results from 62 polling stations”
She emphasized that these declarations were made under duress and are considered unlawful. The EC reiterated that any similar incidents in other constituencies would not be accepted.
Of the 12 constituencies flagged for re-collation, the EC has completed the process for Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North. However, irregularities in Okaikwei Central and Ablekuma North have left the results unresolved.
The collation process in multiple constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central, was disrupted by violence and unrest. Attempts to relocate collation activities to the Police Training School faced disputes over the aggregation and representation of results.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contested the re-collation, insisting that results declared at polling stations should be considered final. The EC’s decision to nullify the results has further heightened tensions surrounding the parliamentary elections in these areas.
