The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the government’s intention to review the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) timetable to provide candidates with adequate intervals between papers.

Speaking at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the Minister explained that the move is intended to give students sufficient time to prepare for subsequent papers and improve their overall performance.

His comments come in response to concerns raised by students and education stakeholders about the stress associated with the current examination format, under which candidates write all their papers continuously from Monday to Friday within a single week.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that under the proposed arrangement, the examination would begin on a Wednesday and end on the Wednesday of the following week.

“I understand that our schedule for the BECE was from Monday to Friday, and that put many of you under considerable stress,” the Minister stated. “Accordingly, the government is reviewing the BECE examination calendar. Going forward, the BECE will begin on a Wednesday and end the following Wednesday.”

He noted that the proposed timetable, which is yet to receive final approval, would introduce a weekend break, giving students valuable time to rest, study, and prepare for their remaining papers—a significant departure from the pressure associated with the current one-week schedule.

“While we start with a core subject on Wednesday, we will end with another core subject the following Wednesday so that students have the weekend to prepare for the expanded workload,” he added.

The Minister further assured the public of the Ghana Education Service’s readiness to implement the proposed changes once approved.

“The Director-General of the GES, Professor Davis, will ensure its full implementation,” Mr. Iddrisu concluded.
