The Managing Director of Ecobank Kenya, Mrs. Jospehine Annan-Ankomah has underscored the power of Edutainment – a blend of education and entertainment in improving financial literacy among women.
Speaking at the Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures held at the Great Hall on March 17, 2025, Mrs. Anan-Ankomah proposed using engaging media such as telenovelas and movies to teach women about financial management.
“Who says financial education has to be boring? Enter what I call edutainment—educational entertainment that uses drama, storytelling, and relatable content to make financial learning stick. Imagine a financial education telenovela!” she remarked.
However, her proposal sparked mixed reactions among female students interviewed by Univers Entertainment, who shared their thoughts on the idea of watching finance-themed movies.
One student dismissed the concept, arguing that it could make telenovelas less enjoyable:
“A telenovela is fun—you get lost in the story and don’t realize how much time has passed. But if you watch it knowing it’s about finance, it would feel too tedious.”
On the other hand, another student welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential impact on women with limited formal education:
“Yes, I would watch it. Many women in Ghana love telenovelas, and a lot of market women have little to no formal education. I think movies centered on financial independence would be a great idea.”
As discussions around financial literacy and accessibility continue, Mrs. Anan-Ankomah’s vision raises an important question—could edutainment be the key to making financial education more effective for women in Ghana?
