The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor in the 2024 Presidential Election will be classified as rejected ballots.

This directive, issued on Friday, November 22, 2024, was communicated through a press release signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of Operations. The Commission explained that Madam Akua Donkor’s inclusion on the ballot paper, despite her demise, necessitated the decision.

Madam Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, passed away prior to the elections. While her name remained on the ballot due to procedural constraints, the EC clarified that “votes cast for her will not count toward the valid votes cast.”

The EC emphasized that the move is in line with its mandate to maintain fairness and integrity in the electoral process. According to the press release, all electoral staff and agents of presidential candidates have been briefed to ensure clarity and prevent disputes during the collation of results.

This decision highlights the Commission’s proactive measures to address potential challenges in the election and uphold transparency. As Ghana approaches the December 7 elections, the EC’s directive serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in managing a democratic process.
