Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled plans to replace traditional textbooks with laptops in Senior High Schools nationwide.
The Vice President made this known during the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School.
In a ground-breaking move aimed at revolutionizing education, the government is set to implement this initiative by the end of 2023.
The initiative seeks to equip students with digital tools and prepare them to thrive in the global village. This development follows the successful launch of the “One-teacher One-laptop” project, which saw the distribution of modern teaching materials to Senior High School teachers across the country.
He noted that this, in the long run will help to actualize the goal of digitalization in the country.
“We must invest in education, which is the only platform for preparing nation builders of tomorrow. The Minister for Education has also assured me that this year we will start the replacement of textbooks with laptops which are textbooks embedded in senior high schools. So you will have the laptop, you will have all the textbooks embedded with past questions, lesson plans and all of that to help the teachers and the students. The final year students, unfortunately you may not be part of it since you are leaving in September. But second year and first year we will distribute these laptops in badges and you will be able to benefit.”
Dr. Bawumia added that the initiative will help equalize educational access in the country in an economical manner.
“We want to equalize access across the country, everybody must have access and we will save a lot of money by the way from the physical textbooks that we are printing. But the Minister for Education has assured me that we will be able to start this process before the end of this year.”
The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has welcomed the news by the government to phase out textbooks with laptops in Senior High Schools across the country albeit with some scepticism. Reacting to the news, Angel Carbonu said ICT is the way forward for the country but stressed the challenges the government will encounter in its attempts to fulfil the promise.
