Deputy finance minister, John Kumah passes away

The Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Ampontuah Kumah, has passed away after a reported brief illness to which he succumbed to on March 7th, 2024.

Sources close to the family revealed that the 45-year-old MP had been battling the illness since November 2023.

Born on August 4th, 1978, Mr. Kumah’s educational journey began at Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, setting the stage for his future endeavors. He later pursued further studies at the University of Ghana, delving into the complexities of law, a field pivotal to his career.

Following the attainment of his law degree, John continued his academic pursuits at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and the Ghana School of Law, honing his expertise in legal matters.

John Kumah, who was well known as Lawyer John Kumah by the people of his constituent in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, was described as a man of integrity with a focus on job creation, instilling hope for the future in both young and old individuals.

He was also the founding Managing Director of Majak Associates Ltd, a construction firm with projects across Ghana.

After establishing the Aduaprokye Chambers, John served as the Managing Partner until his appointment as CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) in 2017.

With over 17 years of continuous working and leadership experience, John exhibited creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness in job creation, entrepreneurship promotion, and youth development. He was recognized as the most Efficient, Prominent Government Appointee in 2018 and listed among His Excellence President Akufo Addo’s top 20 Most Humble and Respectful Appointees in 2019.

He was a loyal member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); John worked for the party from the grassroots since 1992. He was the founding father of the Young Patriots, an NPP youth political activist and pressure group, and a member of the NPP Communication Team. John also contested and won the seat for the Ejisu constituency in the 2020 Ghanaian general election under the NPP banner.

In April 2021, John Kumah was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Finance, diligently serving in this role until his passing. He successfully secured substantial funding for infrastructure and job creation projects in Ejisu, fulfilling promises made to his constituents. Before his passing, he generously donated GH¢120,000 towards repairing the boys’ dormitory at Ejisu Senior High Technical School which was seriously hit by the rain.

Well-wishers across the country have been continuously pouring tributes of his good work whilst extending condolences to the family of the deceased.

Mr. Kumah was survived by a wife and six children.
