Brahim Díaz arrived at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as one of the tournament’s brightest stars, and he leaves it as one of its most tragic figures.
The Moroccan playmaker finished AFCON 2025 as top goalscorer with five goals, inspiring the Atlas Lions’ run to the final on home soil.
Throughout the tournament, Díaz was Morocco’s creative heartbeat — delivering goals, moments of brilliance and leadership as expectations grew with every match.
His performances had many believing this would finally be the year Morocco ended their long wait for continental glory.
But football can be unforgiving.
In a dramatic final against Senegal in Rabat, Díaz found himself at the centre of the defining moment.
Deep into stoppage time, with Morocco awarded a penalty following a VAR review, the 25-year-old had the chance to write his name into history.
Instead, his attempted panenka was calmly read and collected by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, turning hope into heartbreak in an instant.
Senegal would go on to seal victory in extra time through Pape Gueye, clinching their second AFCON title and leaving Díaz’s journey defined by one agonising moment.
Despite finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer, AFCON 2025 will be remembered by Díaz not for his goals, but for the cruel reminder that football glory and despair often walk hand in hand.
