Black Queens rise to 62nd in the world and third in Africa following the latest FIFA rankings

The Black Queens of Ghana have recorded a significant rise in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, climbing from 67th to 62nd after a period of improved performances on the international stage.

The update also moves Ghana three places up in Africa, placing the Queens third on the continent behind Nigeria and South Africa.

This progress comes shortly after the team’s high-profile international friendly against the Lionesses of England on December 2.

Although Ghana suffered a 2–0 defeat, the encounter offered invaluable exposure and contributed positively to their overall ranking points.

The new ranking marks a turnaround for the Black Queens, who earlier this year dropped to 67th in the world and 6th in Africa following a difficult run of results.

Their recent climb reflects consistent performances in qualifiers and international outings, indicating a renewed sense of direction and tactical improvement within the squad under Head Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren.

The timing of this rise is crucial, as the Black Queens prepare for a packed 2026 campaign.

The team has already secured qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating Egypt 7-0 on aggregate, scheduled for 17 March to 3 April in Morocco, and their elevated position improves their seeding prospects heading into the tournament.

It also places Ghana in a stronger position as preparations build toward the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification cycle, with better rankings potentially influencing fixtures and competitive opportunities.

For the team, the leap from 67th to 62nd is more than a numerical shift; it represents momentum, renewed confidence, and growing recognition of their progress.

The  Queens now appear poised to re-establish themselves as a formidable force on the African and global stage.

A number of fans have been quick to juxtapose the growth of the Women’s Premier League to that of the Ghana Premier League, citing the former as the hub for talents in the Women’s team.
