Bawumia reaffirms commitment to responsible mining

The Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party  (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated his pledge to combat illegal mining, commonly called galamsey, during his campaign tour in the Western Region.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, September 29, 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the critical need to protect Ghana’s rivers and natural resources from the devastating effects of galamsey, promising that his administration would prioritize responsible mining practices.

Dr. Bawumia also assured the Chiefs and people of the Western Region that his government would implement a collaborative approach by working closely with mining communities to promote sustainable practices.

“Our rivers and other waters are precious and must not be destroyed. A Bawumia Presidency will collaborate with the mining communities to protect our environment while promoting sustainable mining. It is possible!”

As part of his plans, he proposed reforms that would empower local chiefs to be directly involved in the licensing and monitoring of mining activities in their respective communities, aimed at ensuring greater transparency and accountability.

In addition, Dr. Bawumia announced his intention to establish a Minerals Development Bank, a specialized financial institution aimed at supporting responsible mining initiatives.

”During engagements with the chiefs, leadership and people, I explained my proposals to promote and enhance responsible mining, including reforms in the licensing and monitoring regime to actively involve Chiefs and the local community, and the establishment of a Minerals Development Bank to provide financing for the capital intensive venture of mining. among others.”
