Austria delivered a dominant performance to thrash Ghana 5–1 in an international friendly, exposing defensive frailties in the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match, played at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, saw the hosts take control with an efficient attacking display despite missing key players, including David Alaba.
Austria opened the scoring through Marcel Sabitzer, who converted from the penalty spot after Ghana conceded early. Although the Black Stars showed brief moments of promise, they struggled to match Austria’s intensity and organisation.
The Europeans doubled their lead after the break, with Michael Gregoritsch finishing off a well-worked move, before Stefan Posch added a third from a set-piece, punishing Ghana’s defensive lapses.
Ghana managed a response through Jordan Ayew, who pulled one back on the counterattack to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. However, that proved short-lived as Austria quickly regained control.
Carney Chukwuemeka restored the three-goal cushion with a composed finish, before Nicolas Seiwald sealed the emphatic victory with a powerful long-range strike late in the game, completing a 5–1 rout.
The result highlights growing concerns for Ghana, whose defensive organisation and consistency remain major issues just months before the World Cup. While the match served as a preparation exercise, the heavy defeat raises questions about the team’s readiness to compete at the highest level.
For Austria, the performance offers confidence and momentum, as they demonstrated attacking depth, tactical discipline, and clinical finishing.
Ghana will now need a strong response in their next friendly against Germany on Monday, March 30, as they look to regroup and address key weaknesses ahead of the global tournament.
