Former Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten has resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to enable him to contest for the office of president as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.
He announced this on Monday, September 25 in Accra at a press conference.
This makes it the second time he is resigning from the NPP after he first did so in 2007 but later returned.
Mr Kyerematen said that he had come to the realisation that his contributions were no longer needed in the party hence his resignation.
“Under the circumstances and given the context provided, I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honourably resigning with immediate effect from the New Patriotic Party (NPP)” he said in an address to the nation about his political future at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra.
His decision follows his withdrawal from the NPP’s presidential race citing electoral irregularities, unfair treatment and bias during the super delegates’ conference.
According to him, he feared the issues he outlined would repeat themselves in the final November 4 primary if he stayed in the race.
Mr Kyeremanten’s performance in the first exercise to select only five candidates for the main election in November was a surprise to many since he was considered the main contender to the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He however placed third after Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, after he polled 95 votes representing 10.82% of total votes cast.
His emblem is the butterfly with the motto: “Ghana will rise again”.
He continued: “To actualize this goal I will establish a lead a new Moment for Change in Ghana. The brand logo for the moment is the Monarch Buttterfly, which politically symbolizes change and transformation, hope and positivity.
“It also communicates strength, endurance, spirituality, and trust, which are key traits that I cherish as a leader. In Akan, it is known as Afrafranto. The brand motto of the movement “Ghana Will Rise Again” which symbolizes hope for the future of Ghana.”
