Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Magic Carpet Studios, Mr. Ferdynand Adimefe has called on all relevant stakeholders on the African continent to support and promote the Free Movement of Persons Protocol to foster multilateral collaboration among the youth of Africa.

The ability to collaborate with the youth from other African countries in the establishment of businesses or entrepreneurship according to him is crucial however the reality is characterized by several restrictions in mobility. He was speaking in an exclusive interview with Univers’ Business News.

“For many people, it’s very challenging, but I happen to be in a very digital space. So the case for us is having presence without having to leave your country. For instance, I have friends who are in animation from Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. And we do work together, but we don’t have to go to Lagos to work with each other. But I still believe that for a lot of people in the informal sector who do more regular trade, I think mobility is still pretty much an issue.”

He further noted that there is a need for African governments to view cross-country migration specifically for the establishment of businesses as an avenue for development in the host country.

“So, for young people, there is a sense that some cities favor talents more than others. So, there is a need for mobility (from one region/country to another). And I think for Africa, we need to help governments understand mobility, not as a threat, but as an opportunity.”

“But the reality is that if an entrepreneur is coming, he’s going to create jobs and he’s going to create value. So that is also a way to help governments understand it. We just have to frame that narrative so that the government and the young people see what it is.”

The Nigerian entrepreneur emphasized that a less restricted mobility on the African continent can be achieved through a concerted effort by the youth.

“Implementing the Free Movement of Persons Protocol (FMP) cannot be done without young people across Africa. So, I strongly believe that young people need each other… FMP is a platform where we can begin to connect.”

He commended the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for putting in effort “to advocate for the freedom of movement of people and that protocol to be ratified for most states to come on board to back it.”

Free Movement of Persons Protocol (FMP) is a significant agreement within the African Union aimed at promoting the free movement of people across African borders. As part of broader efforts to enhance regional integration and socio-economic development, the FMP seeks to facilitate easier travel, residence, and employment for African citizens within the continent.
