The Accra Regional Police Command has come to an agreement with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its planned protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
This follows the announcement by the NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah of a nationwide protest on September 17 against the Electoral Commission over its refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December elections. He mentioned concerns about a lack of transparency from the EC as a main reason for the protest.
The main opposition in parliament also raised concerns that the voter register exhibition had been tampered with, further adding to the party’s complaints.
In a letter signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police and Deputy Regional Commander Emmanuel Aryee Akonnor, addressed to the NDC, the police has confirmed that the demonstration would start at 7:00 a.m.
A meeting between the NDC and the police led to an agreement on the protest routes.
“The route for the demonstration will be from Kwame Nkrumah Circle – Farisco Traffic Light – TUC – National Theatre – Stadium – Parliament, where a petition will be given to the speaker.”
It added that the “protest will end at the EC’s office, where another petition will be delivered.”
