An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, in the sum of GH¢50,000, with no sureties required to be justified.
The decision follows a fresh bail application filed by his lawyers after he was remanded into police custody for the second time during his appearance in court on September 12.
Speaking to journalists after proceedings, Managing Counsel at Nkrumah & Associates, Lawyer Martey Addo, maintained that the earlier ruling to deny bail was flawed.
“The same law, however, allowed us to repeat the application and correct such errors. We have argued, and we are glad that our prayer has been heard,” he said.
Addressing a crowd of party supporters who thronged the court, Abronye DC expressed relief at the court’s ruling, stressing that justice had prevailed.
“I am glad that through the hard work of my legal team, we were able to bring our case for a second look by the esteemed Judge, who has done the law good by sticking to principles of common law in granting me bail. It is a joy to be back from my brief stay in police detention,” he remarked.
Abronye DC was arrested on September 8 on a charge of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace, after making unsubstantiated and grave allegations against the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
In a related development, it has emerged that prior to his arrest, he wrote to eight foreign missions seeking political asylum, citing threats to his life and alleged intimidation by state security agencies.
