The Parliament of Ghana Committee on Education is expected to meet the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and other stakeholders today, February 9, 2023 over the recent increments in academic fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.
This was contained in a communique signed by the Clerk of the Committee, Inusah Mohammed on behalf of the Chairman to the President of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council, Martin Boakye.
The meeting is expected to take place in the Committee Room at the Parliament House at 11:00 am.
The Minister of Education or a representative, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Commission (GTEC), and the President of the Graduate Students Association (GRASAG) are expected to be in attendance of this meeting.
Background
Management of the University of Ghana on December, 20, 2023 released the final approved schedule of fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The new fees schedule saw further increments from the last provisional list released a few days earlier
The University earlier in a notice told students that the provisional fees were an interim measure and were that of 2019/2020 which was approved by parliament but were not implemented due to the impacts of COVID-19 on parents.
“As you may be aware, University of Ghana did not implement the fee increases approved by Parliament for the 2019/2020 academic year. The main reason for deferment of the fee increases at the time was to avoid exacerbating the financial impact on parents of the pandemic which had just begun.
However, due to the increasing cost of operations and the fact that Parliament has not as at today, 13th December 2022 approved fees for the 2022/2023 academic year, it has become necessary for the University to implement the 2019/2020 approved fees as an interim measure.”
This increment has generated a lot of heated debate and demonstrations by students to register their displeasure against management decisions.
The Concerned Students of the University of Ghana organized the YABR3MO Demonstration 2.0 which occurred on Friday, 3 2022.
