The University of Ghana has admitted 13,949 fresh undergraduate students for the 2026/2027 academic year, with female students accounting for 58% and male students representing 42% of the newly admitted cohort.

The reduction in this year’s admissions from 16,000 to 13,949 forms part of efforts by the University to improve student-to-teacher ratios and manage overall campus capacity.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor at the morning session of the matriculation ceremony for newly admitted students of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences on Saturday, 31 October 2026, at the Great Hall, Provost of the College, Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana, disclosed that several qualified applicants could not secure admission this academic year due to limitations in infrastructure and other resources.

“This year, many qualified applicants could not be admitted due to limitations in infrastructure and resources. The University continues to strengthen strategic partnerships with government and the private sector to expand access to ensure that more deserving students can access a University of Ghana education in the future,” he stated.

He also said the University continues to implement its affirmative action policy to promote equitable access to tertiary education, particularly for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Some of you came through affirmative action, so usually we consider disadvantaged schools, disadvantaged students and genders. In some programmes, there are more males than females, so we try to encourage more female admissions. So we have an affirmative action plan that encourages more females to come on board,” he said.

On the University’s digitalisation agenda, Prof. Yidana highlighted ongoing investments in technology and improved learning facilities to prepare students for a digital future.

“You are entering a university that is dedicated to preparing you for a digital future. As part of the Vice-Chancellor’s digitalisation agenda, several lecture halls have been refurbished and equipped with modern technologies to support innovative teaching and learning. Through the One Student, One Laptop initiative, 777 students have already received laptops to support their academic journey,” he said.

He also disclosed that three hotspot comfort zones equipped with Wi-Fi were operational, providing students with conducive spaces for studying and collaboration, while three additional facilities were at various stages of completion.

Prof. Yidana encouraged the newly admitted students to take advantage of the University’s improved facilities and opportunities as they begin their academic journey.
