The newly sworn-in 10th Registrar of the University of Ghana (UG), Michael Opare Atuah, has pledged to build an administration that is innovative, responsive, people-centred, and equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
Opare Atuah succeeds Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who served as the University’s ninth Registrar from 2021 until her retirement in July 2026.
Delivering his inaugural address after taking the oath of office at his swearing-in ceremony at the Chancellor’s Residence on Saturday, August 1, 2026, Opare Atuah said he is committed to serving with integrity, professionalism, and transparency while leveraging technology and collaboration to strengthen the University’s administrative systems.
“I accept this responsibility with a simple but profound commitment to help build an administration that is innovative, responsive, people-centred, and fit for the future. I accept this responsibility with a firm commitment to serve with integrity, diligence, and professionalism in advancing the University’s vision and aspirations,” he said.
The Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Mary Chinery-Hesse, urged the new Registrar to uphold the University’s laws, values, and traditions.
“As you take up this office, I would like you to remember that you are stepping into a role that requires you to be both a custodian of the University’s governance systems and an agent of institutional progress. I hope you will approach this responsibility with integrity, wisdom, courage, and, above all, a spirit of service,” she said.
The Chancellor also paid tribute to the immediate past Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, for her dedicated service to the University.
“You have served the University of Ghana well. On behalf of all of us, we say thank you. I wish you a restful retirement,” she remarked.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed confidence in the new Registrar’s ability to build on the progress achieved by his predecessor, noting that his nearly three decades of service to the University had prepared him well for the role.
She said the University community had high expectations of the new Registrar and encouraged him to translate the institution’s aspirations into tangible outcomes through effective administration and principled leadership.
“The University community has high expectations of our new Registrar. We expect leadership that is principled and accountable. We expect administration that is efficient, responsive, and innovative,” she said.
Emelia Agyei-Mensah’s tenure was widely praised for strengthening the University’s administrative systems. Stakeholders expressed optimism that Opare Atuah’s leadership would build on that foundation by promoting innovation, efficiency, and excellence in the University’s administration.
