Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after eliminating Germany 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time in the Round of 32.
The South Americans struck first in the opening half through Julio Enciso, whose composed finish silenced the German support and handed Paraguay an early advantage. Germany, however, responded after the break with Kai Havertz restoring parity as the four-time world champions pushed for a winner.
The game grew in intensity as both sides traded chances, with Germany appearing to have won it in extra time before a controversial decision ruled out what would have been the decisive goal. That moment shifted the momentum and kept Paraguay alive heading into penalties.
In the shootout, goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as Paraguay’s hero, producing crucial saves to deny Germany and keep his side in control. José Canale stepped up to convert the winning spot kick, sending Paraguay into the Round of 16 and sealing a famous victory over one of football’s traditional giants.
For Germany, it marks a painful and unexpected exit, while Paraguay march on with confidence after a result that will be remembered as one of the tournament’s defining moments.
