PhD candidate at the Department of English, University of Ghana (UG), Lilian Glover-Quartey, has urged researchers to make scientific knowledge more accessible by translating complex information into languages spoken by local communities.
Speaking at a symposium on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, on the theme, “Equity and Power in Language Research,” Glover-Quartey said researchers have a responsibility to ensure that knowledge reaches the people it is intended to benefit.
“We must actively centre our academic work on translating complex scientific, medical, and environmental data into the languages spoken by the majority of our population,” she said.
She further called for reforms in teaching methods and research design to promote cross-border linguistic competence and strengthen collaboration among African researchers.
“We must continue to reform our teaching methods and research designs to enable cross-border linguistic competence so that collaborative research across our continent can flourish,” she said.
Glover-Quartey stressed that Africa’s scientific potential can only be fully realised when knowledge is accessible to all segments of society.
“This potential will only be fully realised when every farmer, every student, and every innovator has equitable access to the knowledge they need to thrive,” she added.
