Head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has expressed confidence that Ghana can mount a strong challenge at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)  following their third-place finish in the previous edition.

He made the comments ahead of the tournament in Morocco, where Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside Cape Verde, Mali, and Cameroon.

Speaking on the team’s progress, he noted that the objective has always been to consistently compete among Africa’s top sides.

“Since I came in, the goal has always been to make sure Ghana is a top-four team,” he said.

Reflecting on their previous performance, he highlighted the importance of building on that achievement.

“We achieved a top-three finish in the previous WAFCON,” he added.

On the team’s ambitions going forward, he insisted the focus is on pushing further and hopefully winning the ultimate.

“And if you achieve a top-three performance, of course you always want something better. And something better is not silver. So we are going to do everything we can in the upcoming WAFCON to go all the way, but most importantly, we must keep growing as a group and keep improving,” he noted.

Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the team’s future potential.

“If we continue like this, sooner or later we will have the gold medal around us. I am really looking forward to the future with this amazing group,” he concluded.

The 2026 WAFCON is set to kick off from July 25 to August 16, 2026.
