The University of Ghana has launched the UG Alumni Network App, a digital platform designed to strengthen engagement and communication among alumni across the world.

Speaking at the launch, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo described the initiative as a major step towards building a more connected and vibrant alumni community.

According to her, while informal communication channels such as WhatsApp groups have helped alumni stay in touch over the years, they often remain fragmented and limit broader engagement.

“Informal channels like WhatsApp groups are useful. They are immediate and they serve our alumni communities well. But they are also fragmented,” she said.

Professor Amfo explained that the app provides a centralised platform where alumni can register within minutes, verify their alumni status, complete their profiles, and reconnect with classmates, year groups, alumni associations, and chapters.

She added that the platform enables users to search for fellow alumni by graduation year, college, or location, making it easier to maintain both professional and personal connections regardless of where they reside.

“The platform allows alumni to search for fellow Legonites by year of graduation, college or location, making it possible to find the person you studied beside 40 years ago or the colleague who graduated the year after you and is now working in the same city abroad,” she explained.

Professor Amfo also encouraged alumni to embrace the platform and remain actively involved in the University community.

“I want to speak directly for a moment to every alum of the University of Ghana. You left Legon carrying something no certificate can fully capture. You carried the habits of a mind trained to think clearly, to ask hard questions and to engage with ideas that matter.

You carried friendships forged in lecture halls, halls of residence and on this beautiful campus. And you carried the identity of a Legonite that has opened doors, commanded respect, and the University of Ghana gave you that.

And now the University of Ghana is asking you to register on the UGA Network App, update your profile, reconnect with your classmates and your year group members. Find the alumni chapter nearest to where you live. Offer to mentor a student. Share your story. Support this initiative,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the platform would deepen the University’s relationship with its graduates while fostering a stronger sense of belonging among alumni across the globe.

The launch forms part of the University’s broader efforts to leverage technology to strengthen alumni relations and build a lifelong network of Legon graduates worldwide.
