Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON ) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania, showing resilience and attacking quality in their opening Group encounter.
The Super Eagles started brightly, with Akor Adams forcing Tanzanian goalkeeper Zuberi Foba into a sharp save before rattling the crossbar with a powerful close-range header.
Nigeria’s pace, movement, and direct approach caused consistent problems for the Taifa Stars’ backline, although Tanzania also showed flashes of attacking intent.
Simon Msuva tested Stanley Nwabali with an acrobatic effort that, while unsuccessful, signaled Tanzania’s determination to compete.
Victor Osimhen came close to opening the scoring after rounding Foba, but Bakari Mwamnyeto produced a sensational last-ditch clearance off the line to deny the Galatasaray striker.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home an Alex Iwobi corner, giving Nigeria a deserved lead.
Nigeria pushed to extend their advantage before halftime, but Foba produced excellent saves to keep out efforts from Wilfred Ndidi and Samuel Chukwueze.
Tanzania responded positively after the break and were rewarded five minutes into the second half.
Novatus Miroshi delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and Charles M’Mombwa arrived unmarked to finish confidently and restore parity.
The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Nigeria reclaimed the lead just two minutes later. 2024 African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman created space on the edge of the area before rifling a stunning strike into the far corner to make it 2–1.
Nigeria had further chances to seal the game but failed to convert, and they were nearly punished late on when Ibrahim Hamad blazed a golden opportunity over the crossbar from close range.
Lookman’s strike ultimately proved decisive as the Super Eagles secured a winning start and will look to build on the momentum when they face Tunisia on matchday two.
