Parliament has approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana, following a resolution passed by the House on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
The approval comes after the Appointments Committee vetted Justice Baffoe-Bonnie and, by a majority decision, recommended that the House endorse his nomination.
The sitting, presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin, featured a debate on the committee’s report before the resolution was passed.
During the debate, members of the Majority Caucus strongly supported the approval of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, describing him as a competent jurist with vast experience on the bench.
However, members of the Minority Caucus opposed the nomination, arguing that ongoing cases before the courts could compromise his appointment.
Following the debate, Speaker Bagbin called for a headcount after the voice vote was challenged by the Minority. At the end of the headcount, 163 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the nomination, while 69 voted against it.
The Minority’s attempt to call for a division to allow a secret ballot on the nomination was rejected. Consequently, the House confirmed Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.
