The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced an initiative dubbed the “Lorry Terminal Project” aimed at bringing its services closer to the clientele in the public transport industry.

The initiative is designed to make DVLA services more accessible, particularly to commercial drivers operating from various lorry terminals across the country, eliminating the need to travel long distances to the Authority’s approved offices.

Among the services to be provided at the new stations are: applying for new licences, renewing existing licences, converting foreign licences, obtaining international licences, as well as licence upgrades.

Speaking at the launch of the project, the Chief Executive of the DVLA, Julius Kotey Neequaye, revealed that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to simplify service delivery and enhance operational efficiency in the country’s transport sector.

“We are here to launch the DVLA Lorry Terminal Project to ensure that everyone who qualifies to drive can acquire the requisite certification. Licences must be renewed two years after issuance, renewed again two years later, and replaced a year after the second renewal. These processes include an eye examination to ensure drivers meet the required vision standards,” he stated.

To facilitate this, the DVLA will collaborate with the Ghana Optometric Association to provide on-site eye testing as part of the licensing process.

Mr. Kotey urged commercial drivers to take advantage of the initiative to keep their documents up to date. “This project is tailored for you, even though it is also open to the general public,” he added.

Drivers at the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Circle Kaneshie Station branch welcomed the move, noting that it would save them time and money while helping them maintain compliance.

The DVLA Lorry Terminal Project will operate at the following locations and schedules:

  • Achimota – Every fourth Thursday of the month

  • Amasaman/Pokuase – Every third Thursday of the month

  • Kaneshie – Every first Thursday of the month

  • Kasoa – Every first Wednesday of the month

  • Lapaz – Every fourth Tuesday of the month

The Authority says the project will be expanded to additional major lorry terminals nationwide to ensure uniformity in the implementation of this innovative policy introduced by the new DVLA management.
