Heavy rains expected in Accra: Meteorologist warns of increased flood risk

Senior Meteorologist at the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Joshua Asamoah, has urged residents of Accra to prepare for a particularly intense rainy season, as forecasts indicate above-normal rainfall between March and July.

He issued the warning in an interview with Univers News on May 21, citing increased risks of flooding in the city.

Mr. Asamoah explained that although the rains may not be constant, the total volume over the season is expected to exceed the average for Accra. This, he noted, could significantly increase the likelihood of flooding across several parts of the city.

“The major rainy season stretches until July, followed by a short break in August, and then a minor season from September to November. If we sum up the rainfall we’re expecting from March through July, it will likely be more than what we usually receive.”

He attributed Accra’s vulnerability not just to heavy rains, but to poor urban infrastructure and negative human activities, such as indiscriminate dumping of waste and the encroachment of wetlands and drainage paths.

Mr. Asamoah emphasized the need for proper water retention systems, which can help manage runoff during peak rainfall.

“If run-off water has somewhere to collect during heavy rain, it relieves pressure on communities downstream. Once the rain ends, the flow can be regulated from these retention points.”

He also advised residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and make safety a priority.

“If you know rain is expected around 2 p.m., it’s best to plan ahead and stay in a safe location.”

With the city heading into the height of its rainy season, meteorologists are urging both city authorities and residents to prioritize preparedness and take proactive steps to reduce flood risks and safeguard lives.
