Arsenal delivered a historic performance in the UEFA Champions League, overwhelming PSV Eindhoven with a 7-1 victory in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Philips Stadion. This triumph marks Arsenal’s largest away win in European competition and virtually assures their progression to the quarter-finals.

The Gunners established dominance early, netting three goals within the first 31 minutes. Jurrien Timber initiated the scoring, followed by 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who became one of the youngest players to score in a Champions League knockout match. Mikel Merino added the third, capitalizing on PSV’s defensive lapses.

PSV briefly responded with a penalty converted by Noa Lang before halftime, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, Arsenal resumed their assault in the second half, with captain Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard scoring two goals within 99 seconds of each other. Ødegaard later secured his brace, and substitute Riccardo Calafiori concluded the scoring, sealing a memorable night for the Gunners.

This victory not only showcased Arsenal’s attacking prowess but also set new records. They became the first away team to score seven goals in a Champions League knockout match and recorded the fastest five away goals in the competition’s history.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised his team’s performance but emphasized the need for focus in the return leg to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
