The University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences held its graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 on Friday, February 21, 2025, calling on graduates to transform the healthcare sector.

The College of Health Sciences, which includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery, Dentistry, Public Health, Biochemistry, and Allied Health Sciences, celebrated the graduation of medical doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, public health scientists, biochemical scientists, and allied health professionals.

The valedictorian, “Maame Adjoa Gyasiwaa Aidoo” delivered a stirring speech at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, challenging her fellow graduates to think creatively about addressing the challenges facing the healthcare sector.

“We’re entering our various fields not just as workers, but as innovators and advocates of change,” she stated. “With the same resilience that has brought us this far, let us consider these questions: How can we effectively bridge the gap between urban and rural healthcare access?”

Having pursued a six-year Doctor of Pharmacy program at the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy, Maame Adjoa also urged her classmates to explore health entrepreneurship and policy influence.

“What innovative models of health entrepreneurship can we create to tackle unemployment while delivering impactful and affordable healthcare solutions?” she asked. “What bold steps can young health professionals take to influence health policies and ensure that decisions from top-level management truly reflect the needs on the ground?”

Maame Adjoa also encouraged her fellow graduates to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector.

“Let us not merely replicate the attitudes, practices, and qualities we have become accustomed to, but instead make unique contributions that reflect our passion for making the most out of our time as health professionals”

The graduation ceremony was well attended by dignitaries from the university and the healthcare profession, including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo; Member of University Council representing the Chancellor, Ms. Tina Sackeyfio; and Guest Speaker, Dr. Padi Ayertey.

The ceremony was a moment of celebration and reflection for the graduates, their families, and friends, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their professional lives.
