Students in the Diaspora Halls at the University of Ghana are facing a worsening water crisis, with many struggling to access this basic need.

Residents report that water supply has been inconsistent, with taps running sporadically and stopping without warning. This has left students scrambling to fetch water from distant locations using buckets and barrels.

Speaking to Univers News, these residents revealed they were forced to carry heavy barrels and buckets to fetch water from distant sources, describing the situation as “exhausting.”

“It’s been really challenging, the water can flow for only a few hours, and then it goes off, and we’re left to manage with barrels, but not all residents here have barrels, so it’s a real struggle. It’s exhausting.”

While some acknowledge a minor improvement in the situation since the beginning of the semester, they emphasize that the issue is far from resolved.

“At least now we know when the water is likely to come on and go off, so we can plan around it. But it’s still a struggle, especially when it comes to bathing.”

“For the past three weeks, we’ve been experiencing a severe water crisis. The water comes in the morning for about 30 minutes, and then it’s gone. And if you’re on the second floor like me, you have to go all the way down to the basement to get water.”

The ongoing water crisis has disrupted the daily routines of students, making it difficult for them to prepare for classes and other daily activities. The hall’s administration has yet to provide a lasting solution, leaving students to fend for themselves.

The residents are calling on the authorities to take immediate action to address the crisis and restore consistent water supply to the halls.
