Security expert Richard Komadoe has urged the government to tackle galamsey and environmental terrorism from a policy and security management perspective in order to enhance Ghana’s public safety ratings.

This comes after Altezza Travels ranked Ghana as the second safest African country in 2025, following Mauritius.

He highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law, promoting public education and awareness, punishing crimes, and ensuring accountability, especially among political leaders.

“You also have issues of galamsey and environmental terrorism taking place at some places within Ghana. You will expect that some of these issues should be addressed from a policy point of view and from a security management point of view, carrying the communities along, public education, public awareness, the willingness to prosecute crime and the rule of law, and people being held accountable for their state worship, particularly within political circles.”

Richard Komadoe acknowledged Ghana for maintaining peace and stability despite changes in government.

“In a typical West African country where democracy has become a major threat, we just had an election, and even though there were difficulties, there has been a successful transfer of power from one government to the other.”

He called on the Police Service, as first responders, to prioritise public safety and encouraged security agencies to collaborate in their efforts to respond to issues of public safety

“We will always call on our first respondents, the police, to address issues of public safety challenges. Once they can provide those assurances, it makes us a bit more safer as compared to some other countries.”

“We will want our security agencies to work together to collaborate more so that once they share intelligence among themselves and they build their synergies, even where there are issues, their response would demonstrate to Ghanaians that they are prepared to work and people will have the confidence and the trust.”
