South African singer Tyla has taken the 2024 MTV EMAs by storm, making history as the first African artist to win three awards in a single night. Tyla secured the titles for Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B, outperforming fierce competitors like Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Diamond Platnumz, and TitoM & Yuppe.
The rising star expressed her pride in the global recognition of Afrobeats, a genre she says continues to inspire her music.
“I want to thank my team, my family and the tigers for voting for me… Thank you to Afrobeats. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music. So thank you so much to Afrobeats,” she said.
Tyla’s journey has been one of genre-blending success, bringing together Afrobeats and her Amapiano roots. Her chart-topping single “Water,” a track infused with Afrobeats influences, also earned her acclaim at the 2024 VMAs, underscoring her impact on the global music scene.
Tyla’s remarkable achievements at the EMAs mark a significant milestone, not only for her career but also for African artists pushing the boundaries of musical genres. Her win reflects the expanding influence of African music worldwide, proving that Afrobeats and Amapiano are here to stay on the global stage.
