The University of Ghana will launch its league matches in January 2025. The announcement was made by the Sports and Wellness Directorate during the unveiling of the University of Ghana Games on Thursday, November 7.
The University of Ghana Games is the maiden edition of an event that will focus exclusively on the university’s staff, aiming to improve their fitness and overall wellbeing. The winner of the University of Ghana Games tournament will face the winner of the University of Ghana league in a “Champion of Champions” match.
Speaking to UniversSports on the sidelines of the event, Dr. Austin Luguterah, the Sports and Wellness Director of the University of Ghana, clarified that the league will feature teams composed of university staff and members of the corporate world, not students.
“The league is actually meant for the corporate world. Even within the University of Ghana, we’re targeting staff from the various colleges. Each college is forming a team, and alumni will also form their own teams. Additionally, other corporate organisations are raising teams,” he said.
Dr. Luguterah further addressed concerns about potential schedule conflicts between the league matches and university exams, which sometimes take place on weekends. He assured that the staff’s participation in the league would not be affected.
“It’s not going to affect anything. The colleges have large numbers. The University of Ghana’s staff alone is almost 8,000, and only a smaller number are involved in weekend invigilation. For example, the College of Humanities and the Business School alone could field an entire team. So, it won’t be a problem. There are even people who will be praying for others to be away so they can have the opportunity to play. I’m sure,” he said.
The establishment of the University of Ghana Games and the University of Ghana league is aimed at maximising the use of the university’s sporting facilities, which were upgraded for events like the African Games, ensuring they are put to good use rather than left idle.
