The University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate has launched the maiden edition of the University of Ghana Community Games.
The one-day event is slated for Saturday, November 16, and will take place at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.
The launch event was held at the VIP lounge of the Rugby Stadium on November 7 to familiarise stakeholders and the press with the venue ahead of the competition.
Dr. Austin Luguterah, the Sports and Wellness Director of the University of Ghana, opened the event by acknowledging those who contributed to making the games a reality. He also urged the participating teams to focus on active engagement rather than just winning.
“As we embark on this journey of games and competition, let us remember that the true essence of the University community games lies in participation and not just winning. Participation, connection, and the joy of being part of something greater than ourselves,” Dr. Luguterah said.
The men’s football competition, which is the highlight of the games, features eight colleges and associations of the University, divided into two groups: Group A and Group B.
Group A:
Match 1: College of Humanities vs. University of Ghana Alumni Association
Match 2: College of Health Sciences vs. College of Basic & Applied Sciences
Group B:
Match 1: College of Education vs. Central Administration
Match 2: University of Ghana Enterprises Ltd (UGEL) vs. The Union Ghana
The matches will follow a knockout format, with a total of 7 games leading to the crowning of the ultimate winner. Each match will last 30 minutes, and in the event of a draw, teams will play 3 penalty kicks to determine the outcome. The matches will be officiated according to FIFA rules, with FIFA-certified referees overseeing the proceedings.
In addition to football, there will be recreational games such as Oware, Ludu, and Dame. A women’s penalty shootout and a lime-and-spoon race will also be part of the games.
These games are exclusively for staff, not students, as students already have various competitions of their own. The goal is to encourage staff members to stay fit and healthy in order to better serve the student body.
