Transforming lives, shaping futures: UNFPA Ghana’s Youth Leaders (YoLe) Fellowship Programme enters 6th year

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ghana Country Office has officially welcomed the 6th cohort of the prestigious Youth Leaders (YoLe) Fellowship Programme.

This flagship initiative has consistently developed young talents into skilled professionals across various fields, cementing UNFPA’s commitment to empowering Ghana’s youth.

The YoLe Fellowship Programme has consistently demonstrated its commitment to empowering youth, providing them with opportunities to engage in meaningful projects that address pressing societal issues.

Over the years, it has successfully developed a diverse group of young leaders who are now making significant contributions to their communities and beyond.

YoLe Cohort 6 Fellows

On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, members of the latest cohort, cohort 6, arrived at the UNFPA Ghana Country Office to begin their transformative journey of growth and leadership.

UNFPA Ghana Country Representative, Dr. Wilfred Ochan delivered an inspiring welcome address to the new cohort expressing his enthusiasm for their participation in this prestigious program, emphasizing that this marks the beginning of an exciting journey for each fellow.

“Your being here shows that you have the passion to be a youth leader, and that you have what it takes to join this one-of-a-kind Youth Leadership Development Programme. This program has raised significant interest not only in Ghana but also in many other countries, with your cohort attracting more than 1,000 applications”, Dr. Ochan stated.

The Fellowship Programme is designed to unlock the potential of young individuals by offering hands-on experience, mentorship, and training in critical areas such as sexual and reproductive health, advocacy, and leadership.

Participants will engage in workshops, networking events, and community outreach initiatives aimed at fostering their growth as future leaders.

Dr. Ochan highlighted the core values that guide UNFPA’s work: respect, responsibility, excellence, innovation, and collaboration.

He reiterated UNFPA’s commitment to creating a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

“The program will challenge you to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and develop expertise that will distinguish you as leaders of today and tomorrow. Our facilitators, mentors, and supervisors are experts dedicated to guiding and supporting your leadership development,” he said.

As part of the fellowship, participants will have access to valuable learning resources and opportunities, including online materials, internship placements, and connections to a network of talented peers from previous YoLe cohorts.

Dr. Ochan encouraged the fellows to actively engage in discussions, participate in various projects, and build lasting connections with their peers and mentors.

“Remember that knowledge is power, but collaboration is strength. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Innovation is sparked by curiosity and creativity. Excellence is not a destination, but a continuous pursuit. Engage actively in your work/assessment discussions and debates. Participate in various projects, internships, and professional development opportunities and Build lasting connections with your peers, supervisors, and mentors,” he advised.

UNFPA Ghana Deputy Representative, Dr. Emmily Naphambo who was also present to welcome cohort 6 of the Youth Leaders fellows advised them to make the most out of their one-year stay with agency.

She urged the fellows to constantly document their journey throughout their fellowship, emphasizing the importance of reflection and learning.

“This year is not just about gaining knowledge; it’s about creating a narrative that you can look back on and share with others. Documenting your experiences will help you recognize your growth and the impact you are making,”Dr. Naphambo stated.

She encouraged the fellows to engage fully in all activities, take initiative, and seek mentorship from their peers and supervisors.

“Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share your ideas, and collaborate with one another. This fellowship is a unique opportunity to learn from each other as much as from the structured program,” Dr. Naphambo added.

Dr. Naphambo also highlighted the significance of networking, urging the fellows to build connections that could last beyond their time at UNFPA.

“The relationships you cultivate during this fellowship can open doors to future opportunities and collaborations. Make the most of these connections,” she advised.

UNFPA Ghana Adolescent and Youth Development Program Specialist, Adjoa Yenyi also emphasized youth’s vital role in shaping their communities’ future.

She highlighted the importance of empowerment and active participation in decision-making processes. Adjoa Yenyi encouraged the fellows to leverage their unique perspectives and experiences to advocate for issues affecting young people.

She also spoke about the need for innovative solutions to challenges faced by adolescents and youth, urging the fellows to think creatively and collaboratively.

“Your ideas can drive change,” she said, emphasizing that each fellow has the potential to contribute significantly to the development of effective programs and policies.

Miss Yenyi concluded by reminding the cohort of the importance of resilience and adaptability in their work.

“In a rapidly changing world, your ability to learn and adjust will be key to your success,” she noted, inspiring them to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

With the launch of the 6th Cohort of the YoLe Fellowship Program, UNFPA Ghana continues to pave the way for a new generation of leaders who will champion the rights and well-being of young people across the nation.
