Veteran Hollywood actor John Amos, beloved for his iconic roles in Good Times and Coming to America, has passed away at the age of 84. The actor’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, revealing that his father died of natural causes on August 21. In an emotional statement, Kelly wrote,
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart, a heart of gold, and he was loved the world over.”
John Amos became a household name thanks to his memorable role as Cleo McDowell, the protective father of Lisa McDowell in the classic film Coming to America. In the movie, his character runs McDowell’s restaurant and serves as a comedic yet stern figure, watching over his daughter as she becomes the love interest of Eddie Murphy’s character, Prince Akeem. His impeccable comedic timing and portrayal of fatherly wisdom endeared him to audiences around the globe.
Beyond Coming to America, Amos was a trailblazer in television, most notably for his role as James Evans Sr., the hardworking father in the groundbreaking series Good Times.
