FASU Games: UG football team fails to shine as UDS clinch title

University for Development Studies (UDS) football team have clinched the 11th edition of the Federation of African University Sports games which was held in Nigeria after a resounding 3-0 victory over tournament co-hosts University of Lagos (UNILAG).

In an electrifying final match at the FASU Games,UDS showcased their superiority, defeating (UNILAG) to secure the African championship title.

As the match began, the atmosphere was palpable, but UDS quickly asserted their dominance, focusing their attacks primarily in the UNILAG half, demonstrating their unwavering determination to claim the championship.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Ezideen, the tournament’s leading scorer, capitalized on an opportunity at the edge of the box, finding space to score.

UDS doubled their lead ten minutes later, exploiting a lapse in concentration by the UNILAG defense.

A precise corner kick by Ezideen found Pascal, who had cleverly evaded the defense and was left unmarked, allowing him to score easily.

The UDS coaching staff, spearheaded by Director of Sports Samuel Kojo Whyte and head coach Mubashir Abdulai, were vocal and energetic on the sidelines throughout the match.

Their enthusiasm was rewarded in the 78th minute when Ezideen expertly received a precise through pass and confidently scored his second goal of the game, securing the win for UDS with a calm and composed finish.

Ghanaian Pride:

With their exceptional performance throughout the tournament, culminating in a resounding 3-0 victory in the FASU Finals, the University for Development Studies (UDS) has secured the rights to represent Africa at the prestigious World University Games in China.

Eight (8) Gold Medals:

Additionally, the UDS Athletics team had a stellar showing, bringing home an impressive haul of eight gold medals across various track and field events, further solidifying their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in university sports.

UDS’s medal tally was further bolstered by two bronze medals, adding to their impressive haul.

The men’s 4x100m relay team delivered a strong performance, securing a well-earned bronze medal with their third-place finish.

Moreover, the women’s high jump event saw UDS’s athletes display remarkable determination, resulting in another bronze medal for the university.

University of Ghana’s Early Exit:

Meanwhile, The University of Ghana (UG) football team were knocked out of the 11th Federation of African University Sports Games in the group stages.

Placed in Group A, the team faced stiff competition from Kenyatta University (Kenya), Lagos State University, and FUOYE (both Nigeria).

After a goalless draw with FUOYE, UG suffered consecutive defeats to Kenyatta University (2-0) and Lagos State University (2-1), with Fuseini Ishmael scoring their sole goal in the tournament.

As a result, UG finished last in Group A with a single point, bowing out of the competition.
