The Ghana Police Service has strongly refuted allegations circulating on social media regarding the arrest of a pregnant woman and an elderly lady during the recent Democracy Hub protest.

In a statement released on September 26, the Police called these claims “completely false” and aimed at misleading the public.

The Police urged the public to disregard these rumors, describing them as attempts to incite panic and distrust.

“We want to state unequivocally that no pregnant woman or elderly lady with a child was arrested during the demonstration.”

Amid reports of various arrests, the Police clarified that a 50-year-old woman, Grace Asantewaa, had been misidentified as a 68-year-old. She was accompanied by a child, and in the interest of the child’s welfare, they were allowed to stay together at the Police station.

The Police provided food for the child and granted Asantewaa bail to return home with her.

Grace Asantewaa has been charged with exposing a child to danger for bringing her to the demonstration, contrary to section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The Police confirmed that while several protesters were apprehended for breaching protest agreements, none matched the descriptions circulated online.

The Police reiterated their commitment to professionalism, stating,

“Throughout the demonstration, our officers acted with the highest level of professionalism, and no unlawful arrests were made.”

They cautioned the public against sharing unverified information, which could disrupt public order and safety.
