Ghana’s swimming sensation Abeiku Jackson has made history by setting a new national record and lifetime best of 53.08 in the men’s 100m butterfly at the Brics 2024 Games at Aquatic Palace in Kazan, Russia.

The competition, which run from 12–23 June 2024, saw Abeiku not only clinch a podium finish but also rewrite the Ghanaian record for the event.

Abeiku clocked a remarkable 53.08 seconds in the final, shaving a considerable 0.31 seconds off his previous national record set at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (53.39 seconds).

Despite a valiant effort, the Ghanaian fell short of the gold and silver medals, which went to Russia’s German Zazhirskiy (52.54 seconds) and Belarus’ Grigori Pekarski (52.66 seconds), respectively.

Despite the new height and winning a bronze medal in the competition, the two-time Olympian fell short of Olympic qualification, and would hope to improve his time to be able to represent Ghana in the Paris.

Jackson is currently Ghana’s national record holder for the 50m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle.

He has been representing Ghana since he was 16 and participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, where he narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals of the men’s 100m butterfly swimming event by just two seconds.

Abeiku delivered a bronze medal for Ghana in the men’s 100-meter butterfly and a silver medal in the men’s 50-meter butterfly in the Accra 2023 African Games.
