Newcastle turned on the style against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain at the St. James Park with a dominant display of prowess in their first UEFA Champions League home game.
Miguel Almiron was on hand to get Newcastle’s first UEFA Champions League goal, 20 years after Alan Shearer made history with the magpies in the UCL.
Newcastles’s lanky full back, Dan Burn doubled the lead with a towering header, moments before the interval.
PSG run into more trouble with Sean Longstaff adding a third with an amazing strike to tame the French champions and put the game far beyond reach.
But after a slow start, Lucas Hernandez found the net for PSG to give them a glimmer of hope, responding with a brilliant header of his own. PSG looked more daring after the goal, but efforts to mount a comeback was quickly curtailed following Fabian Schar’s lovely curler to complete the goal feast on a memorable Tuesday night for Newcastle in the St. James.
The Magpies sit at the summit of group F, with 4 points following a hard fought draw against AC Milan in the first game to this dominant display.
Eddie Howe knows how to do it!
Newcastle were set for a big night on Tyneside tonight after missing out on Europe’s elite competition for two decades. And it was the big Howe again who was the mastermind behind the team’s victory; he will lead Newcastle to record their biggest victory in the UEFA Champions league, eclipsing their previous 3-1 record against Bayer Leverkusen in 2003.
More laudable was the magpies attacking intent throughout the game and it’s been quite typical of them under Howe, with their new style and approach to games looking to create openings for goals anytime they are on the front foot.
Against PSG, the gaffer and his lads seem to have done their homework as we saw an improved team relative to the Newcastle side that turned up at the San Siro during the first champions league outing.
Eddie Howe has steadied the Ship at Tyneside despite the stodgy start of the premier league season which saw Newcastle lose three games on the trot. The 45-year old has proved domestically and now wants to rub shoulders with Europe’s elite.
For now, the party continues at Tyneside until their next UEFA champions league outing, where Newcastle will travel to the Signal Iduna Park to take on struggling Borussia Dortmund.
