Benin’s Alexis Kpade received a standing ovation and a resounding applause from the crowd at the UG Swimming pool following an extraordinary show of class in the 50m backstroke.

Kpade was the first to emerge out of the blocks and maintained a fast backstroke tempo to snatch 27.53. Nigeria’s Kolade Israel finished second with Momar Djim Bali of Senegal picking up bronze, ahead of fellow compatriot and Ghanaian Michael Arthur.

In the Women’s 50 LC Meter Backstroke, Ionniah Douillet delivered yet another Beninois delight- 34.26 in a tight contest to win gold, despite Zaira Forson breathing down her neck in lane 4.

Douillet had the slight edge over the Ghanaian, Zaira (34.48) , setting up the catch nicely with her good hand entry and better timing of her rotations.
Agnes John of Nigeria completed the podium with a bronze finish.
