The Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana for Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare has disclosed that the university will need about $5 million in order to fully revamp security on campus.
He made this revelation during an interview with UniversNews after a consultative Town Hall Meeting on Security in the university. The meeting was held at the WACCBIP Conference Room at the Department of Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology on 26th June, 2023 aimed at providing solutions to security challenges in the university.
Prof. Awandare said the university needs more security personnel, technologies for surveillance, and fencing around campus.
“Revamping our security is a comprehensive need that involves employing personnel with certain skills, and advanced technologies for surveillance to aid in monitoring. We also need a running cost to operate these. It is a huge outlet that is needed because we are starting from a basic level now with the security that we have now,” he explained.
He added that the university needs assistance from corporate bodies to strenghten the security system on campus. He however acknowledged the government’s support in ensuring security on campus through the procurement of CCTV cameras.
“The university does not have this amount, we need to raise it. The government has supported the university with CCTV Cameras and the Police have also offered to help with training and that is a significant step in reducing the cost that we need to incur. But a significant amount is needed for us to upgrade the security architecture including building fences.”
Prof. Awandare further advised students to be more security conscious with their movement on campus as Management is doing its best to improve security.
The Town Hall Meeting which was held at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) conference room was aimed at creating an avenue for raising measures to improve security on the University campus. This was to address the recent re-surge of attacks and robberies on various members of the university campus over the past few weeks. Some of these attacks resulted in victims sustaining brutal injuries on various parts of their bodies, with a few still receiving treatment at the hospital.
In light of this, popular Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo had donated streetlights to the University Management for the Evandy and Bani hostels stretch as he promised further assistance.
The University Management is putting in efforts to improve security on campus and it will be a matter of time to obeserve fruitful results.
