The Institute Quality Manager at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Dr. Susan Adu Amankwah, has encouraged freshmen to make purposeful use of their time on campus by remaining open to learning and pursuing holistic personal development.

Speaking to Univers News, Dr. Adu Amankwah advised new students to approach university life with a strong sense of discipline, emphasizing that academic success at the tertiary level requires personal responsibility and commitment.

She urged students to read widely about the programmes they have been offered in order to gain a clearer understanding of their chosen fields and academic expectations before lectures officially begin.

Dr. Adu Amankwah noted that one of the major challenges for freshmen is the transition from the structured environment of secondary school to the relative independence of university life. She cautioned that this newfound freedom is a double-edged sword that demands a high level of self-discipline.

“At the university level, you are given much more freedom in how you learn, so it is important to be disciplined and take responsibility for your studies. Absorb all the knowledge your lecturers share, manage your time well, and do not misuse that freedom. Unlike secondary school, learning here is not rigid, and without discipline, you can easily fall behind,” she cautioned.
