2025 Rugby league festival set to kickstart on November 23

The Rugby League Federation Coordinator, Riddik Alibah, has announced that the 2025 Rugby League Festival will kick off on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.

This year’s festival will be a tri-nation competition, featuring Ghana, Nigeria, and Roots Rugby — a touring club from the United States — participating in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The event will be staged over three matchdays: November 23, 26, and 30.

The opening day will see Ghana’s men’s national team face Nigeria,  while the Nigeria women’s team battles Roots Rugby in the first match of the festival.

Speaking to Univers Sports, Mr. Alibah urged the public to come out and support the growth of rugby league in Ghana.

“The main Rugby League Festival is on the 23rd to the 30th of this month,” he said.

“The teams involved are the Ghana national team — both men and women — and the Nigeria national team, men and women also. And then the club from the US, Roots Rugby, the men and women. It will be their first time in Ghana touring, so it promises to be a good and exciting festival,” he added.

He further disclosed that each matchday will provide thrilling fixtures for fans to enjoy.

“There will be games throughout. On the 23rd, we will have the men and the women playing. On the 26th, which is a Wednesday, there will also be two matches, again men and women,” he explained.

The final day of the festival on November 30 is expected to be the highlight, with a special regional curtain-raiser.

“On the 30th, we’ll have Ghana play Roots and then the women’s teams play as well,” Alibah said. “The interesting thing on the 30th is that a junior team from Kumasi will play against a junior team from Accra — so that’s more like a regional competition and will be a lot more exciting.”

Mr. Alibah concluded with an invitation to the public.

“The 23rd to the 30th will be an exciting Rugby League Festival and we take this opportunity to invite everyone.”

The 2025 edition is expected to further boost the sport’s visibility and provide a platform for rugby league talents across the continent and beyond.
