The University of Ghana team arrived at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Friday, January 3, for the 28th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

The team consists of 187 athletes and 17 coaches. Out of the 12 sporting disciplines in the 28th edition of the GUSA Games—namely Athletics, Basketball, Football, Handball, Netball, Tennis, Badminton, Beach Volleyball, Goalball, Hockey, Table Tennis, and Volleyball—University of Ghana will not be participating in Women’s Basketball, Men’s Football, and Netball.

Before the team departed for Cape Coast, the Sports and Wellness Director of the University of Ghana, Dr. Austin Luguterah, shared a message with the entire team and the University community.

The Sports Director called on the University community, alumni, and stakeholders to rally behind the team as they compete in Cape Coast.

“We urge the University community, alumni, and all well-wishers of the University of Ghana to make time to travel to Cape Coast and cheer on our students,” he said.

Dr. Luguterah also instilled confidence in the athletes, urging them to maintain exemplary behaviour throughout the games and show that the University of Ghana truly is the “premier university.”

“We encourage our students to remember that as we participate in these games, we carry the banner of the premier university. Wherever we go, we represent that status. Let our speech, interactions, and performance reflect that we come from the University of Ghana.”

Dr. Austin further motivated the athletes to strive for excellence in the upcoming games, emphasising that the university’s motto, Integri Procedamus, should guide their conduct.

“Let us go and strive for gold. Let us go with passion, character, and excellence. Let our motto be evident in our behaviour, and let integrity be central to everything we do,” he stated.

Although the opening ceremony will take place on Monday, January 6, the games are set to begin on Sunday, January 5, with the highlight of the day being the UG women’s football team squaring off with the host, UCC, at the Cape Coast Stadium. The UG men’s basketball team will face GIMPA, while the UG men’s handball team will play UMaT and the women’s handball team will compete against UDS.
