The National Democratic Congress (NDC) convened a crucial meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), diplomats, media managers, and journalists on Monday, September 23, 2024, to address its concerns about alleged discrepancies in Ghana’s 2024 Provisional Voters’ Register. This meeting follows the party’s unsuccessful attempt to secure a forensic audit from the Electoral Commission (EC).

During the meeting, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, raised concerns about the theft of the BVD kits and questioned whether the missing devices were part of a broader plot to manipulate the election results. He underscored the suspicious circumstances surrounding the theft, noting the extensive security measures at the EC’s premises.

“The biometric voter registration kits that were stolen—could this be tied to a larger criminal enterprise? These laptops were stolen under CCTV surveillance in a highly secure area. For those familiar with the EC’s office, you know the multiple security layers you have to pass through before reaching the second reception.”

Dr. Boamah , had previously announced the party’s push for transparency in a Facebook post on Sunday, September 22, 2024. He reiterated the need for a forensic audit, citing security lapses related to the stolen Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) and the credibility of the voters’ register.

He also elaborated on the strict security setup at the EC, describing the various checkpoints, including military and police presence, metal detectors, and secured reception areas, which made the theft particularly troubling.

Despite the arrest of a suspect in connection with the theft, the NDC remains resolute in its call for a forensic audit. Dr. Boamah stressed that such an audit is essential to restore public trust in the electoral process, especially after the party’s nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024, did not result in the EC granting their request for transparency.

The meeting with CSOs, diplomats, and media stakeholders is part of the NDC’s broader efforts to engage key actors and press for a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities in the voters’ register, as the party continues to seek accountability in the upcoming elections.
