The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of several candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to various forms of examination malpractice.
This follows investigations into widespread reports of irregularities during the examination period. At a meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee held on Wednesday, December 16, 2024, WAEC approved a number of sanctions against offending candidates.
A total of 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled for bringing unauthorized materials into the examination hall, while 483 candidates had their entire results cancelled after being caught with mobile phones during the exams. In addition, 781 candidates had specific subject results withheld, and 209 candidates had their entire results withheld for various suspected offences.
WAEC also announced that the subject results of candidates from 319 schools have been withheld over allegations of collusion.
The Council has assured the public that investigations into these cases are ongoing and that a thorough review process is being undertaken to ensure fairness. It reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process.
This move underscores WAEC’s zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractice and its continued dedication to maintaining a credible assessment system across the sub-region.
